Black History Month at Sawmill Creek
Sawmill Creek participates in Black History Month every February to
honour the legacy of Black Canadians. We are pleased to share that
all Sawmill Creek students from K-8 will have the opportunity to
participate in virtual presentations provided by Saidat specifically for
Sawmill Creek (
http://www.saidat.ca/). Many of our students will
recall Saidat’s memorable in-person presentation at Sawmill Creek
(pre-COVID). The Saidat Show offers students the opportunity to
learn about Canadian Black History in a lively and engaging manner. She captures the attention of all
students with her visuals, friendly nature, dance and inspirational messaging. She speaks to the
history of many of our Black Canadians and celebrates their achievements. Sawmill Creek has
arranged with Saidat to have access to her links online for use in all classes. Her videos are both
educational and entertaining.
Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 will also enjoy a performance by actress, Lesley McCurdy, in The
Spirit of Harriet Tubman. Lesley portrays the famous Underground Railroad conductor, recreating
stories using words said to have been Harriet Tubman¹s own. Following the performance, Lesley, will
be providing intermediate Sawmill Creek students and staff with live "Talk Back Sessions". In these
sessions students will have the online opportunity to ask Lesley questions about the play and her
performance. For more information on this performance, check out:
The Spirit of Harriet Tubman –Leslie McCurdy.
Throughout Black History Month (and throughout the entire school year), educators at Sawmill Creek
will engage in learning and stories that honour the contributions and legacies of Black Canadians and
their communities. For more information about Black History Month, check out the Government of
Canada’s website at:
