Principal's Message

Principal's Message 2021-2022

Welcome to Sawmill Creek Elementary School! We are a vibrant school community located in the South Keys and Gloucester neighbourhoods of Ottawa. We have over 470 students and 50 staff members from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds. Sawmill Creek is a dual-track school offering learning opportunities for all students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. We provide a 50/50 French/English Kindergarten experience followed by Regular English and Early French Immersion Program options running from grades 1 to 8. We also host a Junior/Intermediate English Language Development Program for students in grades 6 to 8, and English as a Second Language instruction, which is integrated in our regular classrooms. Sawmill Creek is a student-centred school where we focus on academic excellence and outstanding citizenship in a safe and nurturing environment.

Built in 1996, Sawmill Creek's facilities allow students to learn in bright, spacious classrooms with air-conditioning when needed. Our eco-friendly school is equipped with roof-top solar panels and a large back-up generator that allows the learning to continue in the event of a power outage. Sawmill Creek's school day runs from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and we offer an Extended Day Program for families requiring child care before school (starting at 7:00 am) and after school (until 6:00 pm).

As we are in the COVID-19 global pandemic, the safety of our students, families, and staff is a priority. A variety of protocols including hand sanitizing stations, water bottle refill stations, physical distancing, and zoned play areas for separate classroom cohorts are being implemented. Sawmill Creek’s ventilation system has recently been updated and provides fresh, clean air throughout the day. We also supplement our ventilation with 12 portable HEPA air filtration units strategically located throughout our school. Students are cohorted by homerooms, and we are putting a hold on school gatherings including assemblies and special events until we can ensure it is safe to resume these activities. All students and staff are required to wear masks indoors, wash or sanitize their hands at regular intervals, and complete Ottawa Public Health’s COVID screening tool prior to the start of each school day. A mandatory vaccination policy for school staff is also now in effect. We want everyone at Sawmill Creek to remain healthy and safe!

When it is safe to do so, we will return to enriched extra-curricular activities at Sawmill Creek including a variety of clubs (e.g., Chess Club, Man Tea, Run Club, Arts Club, Concert Band, Choir, Hackergals), and sports programs at the intramural and interschool levels (e.g., x-country running, basketball, soccer, volleyball, triple ball, track & field, borden ball). Our Sawmill Creek Coyotes have a rich history of team play where enthusiastic coaches focus on fun, fitness, teamwork, and athletic fundamentals. We are looking forward to continued success in these areas in the future.

We also look forward to the eventual return of pre-COVID opportunities for families to be involved in their children's education at Sawmill Creek, which include volunteering in a classroom, assisting with coaching, and serving in-person on our active School Council. Sawmill Creek’s School Council continues to meet virtually on a monthly basis via Google Meet. Special events like our family dances, the annual barbecue, arts night, family math night, the seasonal concert, dancemania, the school talent show, Welcome to Kindergarten, and movie nights will resume when it is safe. Until then, staff members remain accessible through Google Meet, phone conversations, and in-person meets in the fresh air of our front courtyard. Sometimes special opportunities like last year’s production of Frozen Jr. and our Virtual Grade 8 Leaving Ceremony are possible thanks to the creativity of our staff, parent volunteers, students, and technological innovations such as the use of green screens.

Despite this global pandemic, we want 2021-2022 to be another fantastic year of learning and inspiration for our students and families. If you have further questions about what our school can offer your child, please feel free to contact me at 613 521-5922. I'd be happy to speak with you personally about the many excellent learning opportunities and personal development experiences our dedicated team of educators have to offer at Sawmill Creek Elementary School.

Sincerely,

Tim Pearson

Proud Principal of Sawmill Creek
